Acupuncture is an ancient therapy that was developed by the
Chinese thousands of years ago. By using tiny needles, heat, or
electrical stimulation at precise points over the surface of the
body, healing can be achieved. In veterinary medicine, we use
acupuncture to promote healing, relieve pain, or improve the
function of body systems.

The
basis of acupuncture is the belief that each being is born with
a certain amount of Vital Essence or Jing that is used during a
lifetime. Jing is supported and expressed by the movement of
Vital Energy or Qi (pronounced Chi), which is transmitted
throughout the body via various channels or meridians. These
meridians flow over the surface and also deep within the body,
connecting organs and tissues in a vast network. When there is
an imbalance or disruption of the flow of Qi, disease, illness,
or pain can result. Acupuncture points are specific points along
the meridians which provide access to the energy flowing there.
When stimulated, these points can correct the imbalance of
energy, and help the body to heal.
